MOODBOARD: HOLY COW! | COUTURESQUE

The American West and Southwest hold a certain allure within the cultural zeitgeist. The rugged toughness of the atmosphere is mirrored in the fashion we know and love - stiff raw denim, stetson hats, leather chaps, and snip-toe boots, are as crucial as livestock to Western imagery. We’ve talked before about the enduring appeal of the cowgirl; however, the specific print of both dairy (black and white) and beef (brown/red and white) cattle are arguably becoming America’s answer to leopard or zebra print.

The motif has made appearances recently in the S/S18 collection of Marques’ Almeida as well as Ashley Williams’ F/W17 collections across the pond, but fashion’s use of cow-print has always been a stable touchpoint.
 

As for the cowboy iconography, well, that stretches back nearly a century and a half. Through folklore, film, and television, the lifestyles of ranchers, the rodeo, cowboys, and cowgirls extend far past its geographical borders to create a mythos which can inspire a gypsy spirit like Anna Sui, the modern Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, and subversive British brands Marques’ Almeida and Williams - all the way across the pond. Featuring imagery both old and new, we’ve drawn on this reviving trend to compile a moodboard filled with our take on the true grit and individuality of the American Wild West.
